With the legalization of cannabidiol, the range of CBD products has continued to expand, attracting more and more consumers.
The source of the CBD, the quality of the ingredients, the concentration…
There are many different criteria for choosing CBD oil, and they’re easy to understand.
However, when it comes to storing CBD oil properly, best practices aren’t always so obvious.
Which CBD oil should you choose?
How should you store it properly?
Can CBD oil expire? If so, what are the risks?
Here are some tips to help you store your precious CBD oil properly so you can enjoy it for as long as possible!
CBD Oil: How to Choose It?
Before even discussing how to store your CBD oil, carefully selecting your oil from the start and ensuring its quality are essential steps.
This is, in fact, the first key factor that will affect the product’s shelf life, as well as the preservation of its flavor and effectiveness over time.
Choosing a CBD oil shouldn't be done in a hurry, based solely on the packaging. There are several factors that can help you compare and identify the best CBD oils, including:
- the origin,
- the ingredients,
- the absence of chemicals, traces of GMOs, pesticides, heavy metals, etc.,
- full-spectrum mode,
- the CBD concentration,
- the results you expect.
The CBD oils developed byHigh Society are known for checking all these boxes: their purity and the quality of their wellness benefits are what make them so popular.
Under what conditions should CBD oil be stored?
As with any organic substance, CBD oil cannot be stored under just any conditions. The more optimal the storage conditions, the longer the CBD oil will last while retaining its aroma and properties.
The Importance of Packaging
The first key factor in preservation is the packaging of CBD oil.
It is essential that the bottle be completely airtight, and that the oil not be transferred to a household container after opening, but rather kept in its original bottle and used with the pipette provided.
Our oils are packaged in glass bottles because glass is an inert material; it does not interact with the CBD oil or affect its properties. In addition, we use only tinted glass bottles. This provides the CBD oil with greater protection from sunlight, which can alter its taste and benefits.
So be sure to choose CBD oil packaged in tinted glass bottles to ensure your product stays fresh longer.
Shade and coolness: the essentials
Many products must be stored in the shade, away from direct sunlight, and in a cool place to minimize temperature fluctuations and heat, which can cause bacteria to multiply.
CBD oil should therefore be stored in a cool, dark place whenever possible. However, we do not recommend keeping it in the refrigerator, as this may cause the oil to solidify too much.
Crystallization
In some cases—particularly with oils that have a high CBD concentration (30%)—the oil may crystallize. This is nothing to worry about and does not affect the oil’s quality or properties. Simply hold your bottle of CBD oil under warm running water. This will warm the oil and melt the crystals.
What about the shelf life of CBD oil?
The more closely you follow the storage instructions listed above, the longer the bottle of CBD oil will remain usable— up to 6 months after opening.
In fact, once the bottle is opened, the active ingredients of cannabidiol in the oil begin to degrade. It is therefore strongly recommended that you use the CBD oil quickly after opening it to get the most out of the product.
If the product has expired, you'll notice it right away. The CBD oil will change color significantly, its consistency will be completely different, and the smell will also be a red flag.
Over time, you’ll gain a better understanding of your actual CBD oil needs and the dosage you require on a daily basis. This will allow you to adjust your purchases and avoid wasting product in the future. The High Society team is also available to answer any questions you may have and guide you toward the best CBD oils for your needs.
What are the risks of using expired CBD oil?
When CBD oil has expired, its smell, consistency, and—most importantly—its taste are so different from what they are when it’s fresh that you won’t be able to consume it as usual.
There is not yet enough scientific evidence to determine whether consuming expired CBD oil poses any health risks.
However, aside from consuming them orally, more and more people are finding innovative ways to use their oils past their expiration dates in order to minimize waste.
For example, even though it may be unpleasant to consume directly, expired CBD oil can still be used as a scalp treatment.
While it will have lost its natural cannabinoid properties—which promote health and soothe minor ailments—it remains an oil that will deeply nourish your hair.
