After extracting the trichomes, you don’t immediately obtain resin; instead, you get a type of pollen called “kief” or “skuff.” It is only after compressing this pollen mechanically and exposing it to cold or heat that you obtain CBD resin.
During the process, some molecules break down while others combine. This explains the consistency, unique flavor, and intense effects of CBD resin. Since the characteristics of the plants selected as the base vary from one producer to another, there are different varieties of CBD resin available on the market.
Methods for Producing CBD Resin
The quality of CBD resin depends on both the type of plant and the manufacturing process. In fact, there are several methods for producing CBD resin. This is why the shapes, textures, colors, and—more generally—the final appearance of the product vary greatly. Depending on the method chosen, the resin can be sticky, dry, oily, or soft. Let’s take a look at the most common methods used to produce CBD resin.
The dry sieving method
To use this technique, you can use a mixing bowl covered with a thin cloth. Next, place the CBD flowers in the bowl. Then cover it with plastic wrap to secure everything. The next step is to tap the top of the bowl with chopsticks to dislodge as many trichomes as possible.
Instead of a fine cloth, you can also use a fine-mesh sieve. The appearance and final concentration of the resin will depend on the sieve’s mesh size. The finer the mesh, the more concentrated the CBD resin will be.
After collecting the “kief” in the bowl, you should now knead it by hand for 5 to 10 minutes. The goal is to warm up the “kief” to achieve intense effects. You can use a pollen press to knead and further heat the product. The higher the heat, the darker and more intense the final product will be.
Depending on the situation, you can refine the kief over several days to obtain an optimal, well-balanced product. The CBD resin produced this way can be stored for several years. Simply keep it in a cool place away from light. Your CBD resin will retain its properties for many years. It may even improve over time if stored properly.
The Ice-o-Lator Method
Unlike the dry-sifting method, the Ice-o-Lator method uses the power of water and cold to separate the trichomes from the plant. To do this, you must first place the CBD flowers in the freezer for 48 hours.
Next, place the frozen flowers in a container filled with ice cubes and water. The cold from the ice causes the trichomes to contract, making them easy to remove. You can now blend them using a blender and a bubbleator. Instead of a bubbleator, you can use a drill equipped with a concrete mixer attachment.
After 5 to 15 minutes of mixing, you’ll need to stop; otherwise, the resulting resin will be of lower quality. The next step is to filter the mixture using an extraction kit or a cloth with the appropriate mesh size. It is recommended to start filtering with a coarse-mesh sieve. This initially separates the trichomes from the plant material. Next, you’ll need to separate the resin from the water using finer filters.
The final step is to dry the resulting product. To do this, simply leave it out in the open, taking care not to expose it to light or heat. Similarly, it’s best not to squeeze out the water that remains in the product after sifting. After a few days, your CBD resin will be ready.
The Hand-Rolling Method
Less traditional, the hand-rolling method isn’t universally popular because it’s quite difficult to do. Specifically, you first need to rub the CBD cannabis buds between your hands. The substance that sticks to your hands is nothing other than the resin you’re trying to collect.
Simply roll it into a ball to obtain the desired CBD resin. Of course, to use this method, it’s important to have clean, dry hands. That way, you can be sure to get high-quality CBD resin.
